Indianapolis 1999

So I was in Indianapolis over the weekend to take care of a few things. I am in Indy often but each time I have been there the past few years, I have been busy with shows or recording so I haven't been able to get out and see much.
One evening last week I had some time to do something I have wanted to do for awhile now. As some of you know, I worked in Indy for a six month period with my first employer once I graduated college. I was actually based in Evansville... but they offered me a 6 month assignment to work in Indy where they included a downtown apartment at no charge to me...ha..yea...didn't pass that up. So, this particular evening last week I decided I was going to visit this mexican place where I use to dine… Acapulco Joe’s. As I was driving downtown from the Northside, I wasn’t even sure if the place was still there. Fortunately when I arrived it was there…and I was pleasantly surprised that they now have a large patio. I took my place on the patio..and ordered some tacos and a margarita on the rocks w/salt. The waitress kindly asked if I would like the regular or the jumbo margarita and I said the regular would be fine. I was nursing a late wine night from the night before. The waitress then pulled the extra value card saying that the Jumbo is our special today and it is only .25 more. So, I went for the jumbo (Jake would be proud)
As I waited for my tacos and jumbo margarita to arrive, I started to think about how long it had been since that summer when I lived in Indy. I believe, whether consciously or unconsciously, I had ignored how long it had actually been. About that time, my jumbo margarita appeared…which pretty much took up half of the table. It was a small table. Once I had a couple of drinks of the margarita, I realized it had been 10 years. Wow, a full 10 years…. It was difficult to believe. After finishing up my meal I decided I was going to walk the same path I walked that summer of 1999 from where my office was located to my apartment which was conveniently located on the canal. Not much has changed in that 10 years…as far as Indianapolis goes…and honestly…thinking about it…with me either. About halfway from my office to the apartment there was a bar called the Distillery…it was a great hole-in-the-wall bar…that also sold beer and liquor to go…which I took advantage of on several occasions. I was glad to see the distillery still there…although it had expanded a great deal.. I thought about stopping in for a drink, but I actually left a good portion of my Jumbo margarita sitting on the table back at Acapulco Joe’s (Jake would not be proud) So I passed on the drink and headed to check out my old place. As I left Distillery, I thought I too was pretty much the same as 10 years ago. Still not knowing where life is going to take me and still having big dreams. Honestly, the only difference between me then and me now…is that I know a few more chords..and can kinda write a song..or I like to think I can. Other than that I still consider myself a free spirit and never compromise…I go about my life the same way and do the same things I did back then whether good or bad....it’s all a matter of opinion right?
As I approached my old place, it too was pretty much the same…with the vegetation a little more mature than 10 years ago. I thought about all of the memories still not believing it had been 10 years…..
There are a few of you that read this note might get a kick out of it… others may or may not care. But, it is just a slice of how I ended up where I am.
